Supporting Local Education in Optics/Photonics

Posted on: July 23rd, 2019

At Avantes, our mission is to deliver innovative, state-of-the-art measuring equipment to improve the lives of mankind. In support of that mission, Avantes promotes education and training initiatives related to the field of Optics & Photonics. Recently, Avantes had the opportunity to support the Front Range Community College (FRCC) system with the grant of a spectrometer. The United States may see as many as 2.4 Million manufacturing jobs going unfilled by 2028 as the need for skilled laborers grows.1

Optics Technology Certificate

Each year, there are an increasing number of products that include optical technologies such as cameras, projectors, telescopes, microscopes, and even appliances. Demand for skilled optics technicians is growing, too. The Optics Technology Certificate from Front Range Community College is designed to meet the needs of the optics industry for skilled workers, and the needs of the US workforce to provide high-paying skilled jobs in the future.

Students in the Optical Technology program will learn important skill and concepts relevant to the optics industry including understanding the nature and properties of light, reading design documentation, using industry tools and techniques to collect and interpret photonics data, and gaining familiarity with manufacturing processes common in photonics. Students will prepare to work in labs and clean room environments in the new state of the art facility designed to prepare students for work in industrial manufacturing.

The Center for Integrated Manufacturing

The Optics Technology certificate program is based out of the all-new Center for Integrated Manufacturing is located at FRCC’s Boulder County Campus in Longmont, Colorado. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to provide industry-led hands-on training in essential modern manufacturing techniques such as automation engineering, electronics, and machining in addition to optics and photonics.

Avantes Supports Education

Avantes is supporting the newly created Center for Integrated Manufacturing and the Optics Technology program with the donation of an AvaSpec-ULS2048XL spectrometer with UA grating (200-1150 nm), 50 nm slit, and USB2.0 interface as well as the AvaSoft suite with Thin Film module and AvaLight-DHc compact deuterium-halogen light source (200-2500nm) with TTL-Shutter and power supply.  It is our hope that our instruments will help young Coloradan eager to join the industry and that the students at Front Range Community College will go on to lead successful careers in optics and photonics.
