LIBS Diagnostics of Molten Salt Reactor Off-Gas Streams: Broadband and Isotopic Analysis Enabled by Avantes
As the nuclear energy sector advances toward safer and more efficient reactor designs, molten salt reactors (MSRs) have emerged as a promising solution—offering passive safety, continuous fuel circulation, and carbon-free electricity generation. However, their complex chemical environments and high-temperature conditions demand robust, real-time diagnostic tools. This application note highlights a groundbreaking study conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with Avantes multichannel spectrometers enabled broadband elemental detection and hydrogen isotope analysis in MSR off-gas streams. The findings underscore the value of modular spectroscopy systems for monitoring next-generation nuclear technologies.
