Measuring Organic Matter in Soil With NIR Absorbance Spectroscopy

Posted on: April 29th, 2024

This month, our experiment aimed to honor Earth Day, a global event celebrated annually on April 22nd to promote environmental protection. In tribute to this day of environmental awareness, we focused on measuring the Earth itself, specifically delving into soil composition, which encompasses a diverse array of molecules, minerals, and organic matter. Notably, certain components exhibit distinct absorbance peaks in the NIR spectrum, such as the free water OH features at 1400 nm and 1900 nm, along with clay lattice OH features at 1400 nm and 2200 nm, which can also indicate moisture levels. Moreover, correlations have been observed between visible range spectra and measurements of organic matter and pH values.
